Semax is a heptapeptide (Met-Glu-His-Phe-Pro-Gly-Pro) derived from the adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH) 4-10 fragment. Unlike Epithalon, which exists primarily in preclinical literature, Semax has registered medical use in Russia for ischemic stroke, transient ischemic attacks, and cognitive dysfunction. This status is clinically meaningful — it implies Phase II/III data by Russian regulatory standards and post-marketing safety tracking.
Mechanism of Action
Semax’s primary mechanism is BDNF (brain-derived neurotrophic factor) upregulation. BDNF is a neurotrophin that supports neuronal survival, synaptic plasticity, and the formation of new neural connections.
